In the 1500s when the navigator Vicente Yanez Pinzon discovered the Amazon the best route for crossing Amazonia started here, at Pará, in the mouth of the most powerful river in the world, on whose banks was founded in 1616 what was to become the biggest Portuguese town on the equator : Belém do Pará. Known as the metropolis of Amazonia, Belém do Pará shows how man and nature can live in peaceful co-existence. |
