Dakar is the capital of Senegal. It lies at the westernmost point of the African continent between 12.5 and 16.5 degrees north and between 12 and 17 degrees west. The country’s western border consists of 700 kms of Atlantic Ocean coast. The tourist sites are: the rose lake, the island of Gorée, the presidential palace, the national assembly, the chamber of commerce, the station, the cathedral of African memory, the great mosque, the Soumbédioune handicraft village, the Soweto square museum. You should also see the markets (Kermel, Sandaga and Tilène), which are filled with exotic smells and incredible colours.
Senegal enjoys a tropical climate characterised by two principal seasons: a dry season from November to June and a rainy season from July to mid October. Between November and May when the trade winds constantly sweep over the Cape Verde peninsula is the freshest and airiest season.
The Saloum isn’t a branch of the sea but the delta of the Sine and Saloum rivers. There are several camping places stretching alongside the latter near the villages of Djifère (at the mouth) and Foundiougne, and also on the island of Marlodj. The flora (baobabs, mangroves ….) and the fauna on land and water constitute one of the principal riches of this region. |
