500 kilometres off the coast of Senegal Africa threw a string of volcanoes into the deep blue of the Atlantic. For us sailors this archipelago is situated halfway between Europe and Brazil. In the harsh and imposing territories of the nine inhabited islands an original blend is being mixed from the wisdom of old Europe, the ancestral traditions of Africa and the enthusiasm of a young people :
The Cape Verde archipelago is situated between 15 and 17 degrees north. By virtue of their position with respect to the north-east trades these islands are grouped into the Barlavento (windward): Santo Antão, Santa Lucia, São Vincente, São Nicolau, Sal and Boa Vista, and the Sotavento (leeward): Santiago, Maio, Fogo and Brava. The awe-inspiring mountains and huge beaches are a real godsend for all water-sports and, decorated melodiously by the originality and beauty of its music, constitute Cape Verde’s calling card. |
